Our All Time XI series provides ex-players, coaches, and stalwarts of the club a platform to share their all time Saxmundham Sports FC XI, with a goal of promoting our clubs rich history, whilst enabling those connected with the club to reminisce and share nostalgia.
Next to make their selection is ex-player Bert Andrews.
I first signed for Sax after leaving school in 1970, aged 15. There was no youth leagues then so I went straight into adult football and I made my first team debut that same year. Apart from a four year stint with Leiston I played all my days with Sax and played with numerous great players and characters; here are some of the best.
GK - John Cady
Excellent, reliable 'keeper
DR - Dick Nettleingham (Senior)
No-nonsense, hard-tackling full back
DL - Chris Stone
Wonderful left-footed player, never saw him miss a penalty
DCR - Barry Driver ©
Tall lanky centre back, a good reader of the game
DCL - Pat Robins
Another very good centre back
MR - Bert Andrews
Playing myself in midfield so I can get my chosen strikers in
ML - Phil Stone
Very good intelligent player
MCR - Ivan (Zippy) Fryer
Outstanding footballer, stood out from a young age
MCL - David Lummis
Very strong, hard as nails with a shot like a rocket
ST - Buster Jarvis
Brilliant striker, could play any position on the pitch
ST - John (Jack) Trigg
Old-school centre forward, good in the air. I learnt a lot from him when I first got in the team
Sub 1 - Colin Balls
Hard-working midfielder
Sub 2 - Terry Archer
Another talented midfielder
Sub 3 - David (Jack) Horner
Great player in defence or midfield, never gave less than 100%
